Growing up and having studied karate in the orient, karate wasn't just some martial art to me.
It was also developing strength of character, calm resolve, humility, and striving perfection in
my karate. Coming to America it was hard to find the right dojo (japanese)/dojang (korean).
Most schools want to tie you up in year long contracts, run it business like and focus more on
sport karate or if not the martial aspect only of karate. At SKA, I have found a home. I find the
instructors are not only interested in helping me develop my karate, but most of all develop a sound mind
and character. For me karate isn't just for combat, but it is also a science, a sport, and an art. Maintaining a balance requires discipline through correct instruction. This I have found at SKA Kansas city.

Hello Mike, I am on the West Coast now, could not find a Shotokan Dojo out here but I found another traditional Japanese Jujitsu School that operates on donations rather than contracts. Anyway, just wanted to thank you and Mr. Beltram for the short time I had with you as a student. I recovered my health and found the level of instruction highly beneficial. My experience, looking back I can only describe as excellent. I feel very prepared to study in any Dojo that I choose to practice in after having studied with the Kansas City Shotokan Club. Thanks again and Best Regards, Richard Arnold

With different senior instructors at each class, I get a little bit of experience from them all. The ads say you must be 14-16 years old but kids as young as 8 can practice with their parents. Don't expect to buy a black belt here. You will earn your rank through hard work and ability. They don't even have a contract to sign. We pay $50 per month and practice as many times as we want. This is soft style Karate at its finest and it fits my tired old body very well. Come and see what its all about!

The Kansas City Shotokan Karate Club changed my life. This dojo focuses on self-discipline and the purity of Karate. You are not only taught technique by some of the best high level karate instructors but you are also taught the art of self and you learn a lot about yourself through the eyes of karate practice and instruction. From the stretching warmups to the rigors of practice to the cleaning of the dojo floors after practice, this dojo feeds the soul. It is a great group filled with an eclectic mix of people who all share a passion for martial arts in its simplest form. There are no pressures of competition for medals or status, you are competing with yourself.
In keeping with the simplicity and purity of practice, they only use 3 colors of belt; 5 degrees of white, 3 degrees of brown and 5 degrees of black. This takes away any distraction of needing to be a higher color of belt. It helps keep the humility needed for a true practice. The camaraderie that forms through a practice like this is unmatched. They also hold two special trainings a year, which are invaluable. If you truly want to find out what you are capable of, special training takes you to the next level.
I cannot speak highly enough about this dojo. If you are looking for true practice and a way to find what you are capable of, this is the dojo for you.

The Zen of Shotokan Karate

The senior instructor has been practicing martial arts for almost 60 years. The 'junior instructors' are high-ranking black belts and each has practiced Shotokan Karate over 30 years. The dojo is traditional, springy wooden floors - no trophies or other flashy stuff in there. This place is the very essence of Zen. You want to learn the art of karate? This is the place for you.
