i've known and trained with some of the instructors at this school and can testify that they are people who, if I still lived in the area, would be thrilled to train with. They are very cool, laid back in person, but train with a high level of intensity, expertise and respect. I highly recommend NCSDA.

I have been to many Brazilian Jiu Jitsu schools across the country, some of which are very well-renowned, and the level of instruction and the resources available to the students at the North Coast Self Defense Academy are unsurpassed by any other facility I have visited.

The academy is nice mats, good environment, the people are friendly and helpful and the instruction, especially from Hal, is priceless. It has changed my life for the better in many ways.

I have brought my two young boys to many different kids classes around Arcata. We have done swimming, Karate, art, tennis and soccer. I felt disapointed with many classes around here and had to drag my boys to each of these classes but my boys love the kids classes at this academy by far! My youngest boy loves their Lau Kung Do Kung Fu class and my oldest loves the Brazilian Jiu Jitsu class. All of the instrutors I have seen are great with the kids and are well educated and dedicated to their martial art. I enjoy sitting in on the classes and watching them excel. They also invite the kids to stay and watch the adults class afterwards which they love! I would recommend this self defense academy to other parents who are looking for good kids classes!

Hal Faulkner will always be my master and guru, at least, one of them. I stumbled upon North Coast Self Defense Academy as a freshman at Humboldt State, and was immediately taken by Hal's friendly nature and shining personality. The instruction is superb, Hal's teachers are legends and it shows; I started training shortly before Levi and Justin arrived and watched Hal breed them into the fine instructors they have become today. The Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, Filipino Kali, and Jeet Kune Do skills that Hal taught me have not only made me a better fighter and martial artist, but a better person emotionally, mentally, and spiritually.

I feel like I could go on for hours, but I can't. This dojo treats everyone who walks through it's doors with respect and like family. Take advantage of the rare opportunity to have first-rate martial arts instruction in a remote place like Humboldt County! You will not regret it.

what a great all around gym. It's big, clean and everyone is really friendly. It's even walking distance from the arcata green. With low monthly rates and an unlimited class schedule you can't go wrong. They even gave me a discount cause I attend HSU! I have only been doing this a couple months but my boyfriend has already noticed my arm and belly toning up! I love this place...

This academy is very clean and has a huge mat space... this has been hard to find! I have been going to their Lau Kune Do Kung Fu classes and I love them! They have these classes five days a week during different times of the day so they fit into my schedule easily. They just began Kids Lau Kune Do Kung Fu so I am planning on bringing my son in next week! The teacher Josh is a great instructor and is very knowledgeable.
