Closed without notice taking money and destroying children's dreams

For what seems to be fraudulent reasons, the dojo closed with 3 days notice. No offer of refunds or path for kids to go. Just shut the doors on everyone with no valid reason. Very sad.

A True Dojo

As a new Mesa resident, I wanted to find a dojo where I could train. So I conducted a Google search on the art of Aikijujustu wondering if there were any dojos near me. I found the Budo Shingikan School of Martial Arts. So I went by to see the school.

Admittedly, the complex where the school is situated seemed a bit dead since there didn't seem to be any active businesses on that particular Saturday. It can be a bit hard to find though during the day until you see the banner outside. At night, there's a neon sign lit.

Although it was a bit hard to find since I'm not originally from the area, upon entering and receiving the warm reception by the front desk and a man who turned out to be the head instructor, I felt very comfortable. Choosing a new school where to train can be quite nerve-wracking and confrontational. After a short tour though, the head Instructor explained that they were offering a week trial where I would be able to experience some of their training. After taking the week, I ended up signing up.

Although there some might have an issue with one instructor handling a class of kids, it doesn't seem any different than any other school teacher with an elementary school class. However, in the case of this dojo, higher ranking students do assist Ms. Shannon, the children's instructor.

No place or situation is perfect, but this place is definitely on another level than of the other "dojos" I went to see. As I said, I looked for a place to train before finding this school. But, I quickly became tired of "McDojos." You know what I mean, those places that seem to spring up overnight offering whatever is cool at the time. Right now, it's MMA. It's pay your fees and you get belts thrown at you (or your kids). By the way, if you want your kid to learn discipline and confidence because they can beat up another kid a la MMA style, then this is definitely NOT your school. This dojo focuses on "blending" with your opponent and using his/her negative energy against them in SELF-DEFENSE, with the option of NOT permanently damaging another person. If learning to hurt others for no reason is your thing, then again this is NOT your place.

In conclusion, the only thing I can suggest is to check the dojo out yourself. Only you will know what works for you.

I could not be more happier. Before I found Budo Shingikan School of Japanese Martial Arts I spent the better part of 3 months searching for a place to start my martial arts training and get back into shape. One year later, after joining Budo Shingikan, I am 47 years old and in the best shape of my life. Most importantly, I've learned how to defend myself in the process. Sensei D’Antonoli is a great mentor and instructor. Honestly, you just have to come see for yourself.

Since I became a student of Budo Shingikan School of Japanese Martial Arts almost a year ago, it has become a second home for me. I've met some of the most amazing people and made great friends within the Budo Shingikan family. I couldn't be more amazed at what I've accomplished! I am back in shape and feeling great. I've had lots of fun learning and helping teach lower ranks and encouraging those around me. The kids classes are a blast. Not only do I get to help them, I get to watch them grow to be more confident and respectful.

I could go on but, don't just take my word for it... you have to try for yourself.

D'Antonoli Sensei is the most dedicated, talented and encouraging teacher. He is always accessible and answers all our questions. I hope he knows how much we appreciate his dedication & passion he has for the students.

Great School, Amazing New Location

I've been a student at the Budo Shingikan for a little more than a year, and I have to say that I am incredibly impressed with the level of dedication I see in the instructors and staff. They really care whether or not you learn the art you are studying. If you are interested in more of a "show up and get your next rank" kind of place, then in all honesty this probably won't be the place for you. The head instructor, D'Antonoli Sensei, believes that there is no point in rank promotion with a demonstration of the appropriate level of skill. In a world where everyone gets a trophy for just showing up this might be hard to swallow, but the results speak for themselves. People actually learn and progress!

The new location makes a huge difference as well. Tee mat space alone (+/- 2000 sqft) is bigger than the entire dojo at the previous location. They even have free Wifi for people waiting for kids or just hanging out after class. All in all, this is a great place to train, for kids and adults. I highly recommend it to all!

There is a real spirit of family at Budo Shingikan. We felt welcome since the first day. Everyone is treated as family. Their enthusiasm for the school and the students is engaging. We originally selected the school because it was nearby and the hours of practice worked well with our schedule: Simple requirements that are sometimes hard to attain in these busy times. But we have gained so much more. They are knowledgeable in their instruction. Sensei is truly dedicated and has a gift for teaching. My son enjoys going to all the classes.

If you really want a teacher to teach you a real martial arts and not just the moves but the complete art then this is the school to you. I have been to many other schools and this one is top notch. I can't recommend it higher.
