Good School if it was not cross marketed so much.

This would have been a great school for my daughter had they not cross marketed in so many ways. Their classes are overflowing because flyers are going out every other week to bring an influx of way too many students wanting to try out their 6 week program. The parking lot is always jam packed and there's not enough attention focused on the existing students - just on how to bring more bodies through the door.

I moved to Benicia and have taken Tae Kwon Do
Before, so Vallejo's was the natural choice. I went on their website and did not see any price plans (1st red flag). When I called a friendly lady answered the phone, who. I later learned was the instructor's wife. She refused to give me any pricing over the phone and stated that I had to come in and talk to them in person. Ok I went to observe the class. It was a large class and there were several black belts walking around helping out with the instruction. They had their name stenciled on the back of their gi's, like 'Mr. Johnson', etc. the instruction seemed fine, they were going over kicking drills, nothing fancy, and the students seemed happy. They were mostly lower belts though. After class the wife and Mr Vallejo talked to me, with Mrs Vallejo doing most of the talking. She asked me about my martial arts experience before and then proceeded to tell me about the billing requirements. 1) I have to buy their equipment, no exceptions. When asked why she claimed that she was all about safety and it was the one the insurance company approved, never mind you could fine the same stuff cheaper and it had their name plastered all over it. I had trained in several dojos and this is the first time I have heard of this, sounds like a fake excuse to me. 2) you must sign a contract, when I called I stated that I do not do contracts, period. When I get there, what do I hear? A required yearly contract! And the only way that one could get out of it is to move over 50 miles away. Then came 3)the pricing. She stated that the lowest she could go was 125 dollars a month, really. For Benicia? That cinched it. Went elsewhere. Then after hearing another reviewer stae that he could have the dojo closed for a month so he could on vacation. You cannot have one of those black belts with their name so ostentatiously stenciled on their gi's teach the class.

The level in instructional aid is minimal. If you get it quick than it is okay. If not then Master Vallejos is not that patient, Quaters vs. size of the classes are very tight. The quaters are so tight it is difficult to watch any classes or testing for the parents. May times there are not ANY chairs to sit and you have to stand outside or drop off. Expensive.....Equipment is mandatory and it has their school name all over it....you can find the same equipement cheaper else where but they required their equipment. We did not realize this going in. The hours of the school being open is minimal. The close down every single day the schools are closed. NO CLASSES. So you pay for a month that they may not even be open the entire month...they close for all of spring break, winter breaks, etc. They are closed on Fridays, Saturdays, etc. We did not realize this till it was too late. Monthly fee is high and contract is mandatory. The do not charge for strip testing, but they do charge for belt testing and to get the belt. Other schools in the area do charge for both. We also got a lot of advertising and requests through Facebook for alternative things the owners do on the side. IT was a disappointing experience.

Outstanding school. Great place for the family.
Kwan Ja Nim is fair but firm, exhibits patience with his students while maintaining a disciplined environment, and teaches the martial art of Tae Kwon Do in a welcoming yet structured environment. I appreciate the fact that Kwan Ja Nim and Ma'am take a vested interest in the WHOLE PERSON. What I mean by this is that they not only concentrate on the skills required in learning the art of Tae Kwon Do, but they concentrate on the EMOTIONAL WELL BEING of the student as well. They encourage PERSONAL BEST in all areas of life: school, family, sports, conduct, etc.
If you want the BEST for your child, Vallejos Tae Kwon Do in Benicia is the school to be at! They have been teaching in our town for over 30 years! That should tell you something GREAT about Master Vallejos!
