With Japan submitting Karate as a recommended sport to the IOC this past month, many athletes may be wondering about training for the Olympics. If you're in the Metro-East or St Louis area, there is only one choice. Unless you want to drive up to Chicago, the only USA Karate-Do Federation (the official US Olympic Team Karate organizing body) recognized club is Sensei Bedard's USA Karate Clubs. Only 15 clubs in the country feed this system, an USA Karate Clubs is one of them.
Before you sign up for another club, ask how many athletes they sent to the Harper College Tournament in Chicago, how many medaled. What about the national trials or the Pan-American games? USA Karate Clubs sends athletes to these events, and they win.
If you are interested in the social aspects, casual exercise, earning belts, any club you are comfortable in will do. If you want to be an athlete and compete in this sport, there is only one choice in the St Louis area. (He also teaches a serious Kick-Boxing class).
