As a student of martial arts for many years, I have had the privilege of learning from several excellent instructors, but none quite compared to the exceptional expertise and instruction provided by Sensei Lewis.
Under his guidance, I have been able to refine my technique, improve my strength and flexibility, and gain a deeper understanding of the philosophy and principles behind the art of karate. His mastery of the martial art is evident in the precision and fluidity of his movements, and his ability to break down complex techniques into simple, manageable steps has been invaluable to my progress.
But what truly sets Sensei Lewis apart is his unwavering dedication to his students. He takes the time to get to know each of us individually, tailoring his teaching style to our unique needs and abilities. He is patient and supportive, always encouraging us to push ourselves further and strive for excellence.
Overall, I cannot recommend Sensei Lewis highly enough. His masterful instruction and unbeatable expertise make him an exceptional teacher that you won't want to miss out on.
Exactly what I hoped it would be.

James reached out to me to do a review and I was more than happy to do this and very excited to hear that he was working on starting a new dojo to teach again. I've trained with James for a little over a year, and it has truly been a life-changing experience. James is incredibly knowledgeable and passionate about karate, and he always pushed me to be my best. The sense of community there was also amazing - everyone is so supportive and encouraging, and I've made some great friends through training. I've seen significant improvements in my strength, flexibility, and overall confidence since starting Toushikan . Whether you're a beginner or an experienced martial artist, I highly recommend giving Toushikan a try!"

I trained with Sensei Lewis several years ago when in college and learned more in a year than I learned in the last few years at the other dojo I was attending. Excellent instructor and very informative.
I recently joined Toushikan Karate as a brand-new student, eager to embark on a journey into the world of karate. As a complete novice, my initial experiences at class have been nothing short of fantastic.
From the moment I walked in, I was warmly welcomed by the instructor and fellow students. The sense of camaraderie and mutual respect within the dojo's community is evident creating a supportive environment that is crucial for anyone starting their martial arts journey.
James is not only highly skilled but also an excellent teacher. He takes the time to break down techniques, ensuring that even beginners like me can grasp the fundamentals. The classes strike a perfect balance between physical conditioning, traditional forms (katas), and practical self-defense techniques. The structured curriculum helps new students progressively build their skills while keeping classes engaging and dynamic.
One aspect that truly sets James apart is the emphasis on discipline and respect. These values are woven into every aspect of training, fostering an atmosphere of mutual respect among students. The instructor not only teaches the physical aspects of karate but also instill important life lessons about perseverance, humility, and the importance of continuous improvement.
As a new student, I appreciate the open-mindedness and approachability of the members. They immediately make you feel welcome, creating a sense of mentorship within the dojo.
In conclusion, my experience with Sensei James Lewis of Toushikan Karate has been overwhelmingly positive. Whether you're a seasoned martial artist or a complete beginner like myself, this dojo provides an inclusive and enriching environment that promotes both physical and mental growth. I look forward to continuing my journey with James and the other students, and highly recommend it to anyone considering taking up karate.
