My 7yr old son and I started training at Tosh's Academy of Shorin-Ryu about 2 yrs ago. I pick this school for many reasons but mainly because of the tradition teachings as well as the respect the flows throughout the dojo.
The longevity of the students and instructors was also something that stood out. Many of the martial arts schools I visited in my area only had 1 or 2 senior instructors with many years of teaching under their belts. And a couple didn't even have a single senior instructor. Hanshi Tosh still leads many of the classes and always makes him-self available to his students.
I also love the association that we are affiliated with, World Okinawan Shorin-Ryu Karate & Kobudo Association (WOSKKA). A few times a year members from the affiliated dojo's gather for training workshops. These workshops provide exposure to techniques and perspectives used by the other styles of Shorin-Ryu. These are a blast!
Last year my 6 yr old daughter started in the Kinder Karate Program which is a little less structured and shorter in time which seems to fit her well. I look forward to her joining the regular class next year.
All in all I have felt at home in this dojo and the instructors and students feel more like family then what I have experienced at other schools. And the traditional training reminds me of my time I spent leaning Shotokan with my first Sensei Larry Hamby when I was 12.
If you’re looking for MMA and ground and pound this might not be a good fit but if you looking for a high-quality school that has experienced senior instructors and teaches traditional karate in a family environment look no further.
