Top Notch Instruction for All Ages and Levels

I searched throughout Westchester / Fairfield area for a traditional karate school - taught with both discipline and encouragement - for my 7 year old son who had started Shotokan Karate at another school. I observed several schools, and the instruction of Sensei Takahashi was of such high quality that I enrolled myself after 23 years of not practicing karate. The proof is in the quality of this dojo's students of all ages, and their passion to make each move perfect.

still here - - see my review 2 years ago -- and still loving every minute! I usually go 3x/wk and each class is fun and different. I used to train in a Boston dojo where every class was exactly the same and, TBH, it got boring - NEVER that way here. Of course it's a mix of kihon, kata and kumite but Takahashi sensei keeps things fresh and ties it all together to focus on a certain teaching point of the day. This dojo also does traditional weapons kata and kumite (new for me as not taught by JKA) so that, too, keeps things fresh. If you love traditional Shotokan you've got to stop by.

Great for beginners, the very experienced martial artist, and everyone in between. I started 3 years ago at age 45 as a white belt and go 3x per week, 90% of the time taught by Sensei Takahashi. Start your kids early, as young as 6/7 or as teenagers, and never too late to start or re-start as an adult. Sensei is the best instructor I have worked with in any subject -- he sees everything and offers personalized advice even in a class of 20 people. Hope to see you at the dojo.

Best Shotokan in NY - from 7 to 70 (not exaggerating!)

As an active member in JKA since 1981 who trained in Japan for over 2 years, I've been fortunate to train with some luminaries (3 directly trained by Master Funakoshi) and I tell you without hesitation that the instruction here is WORLD CLASS. You get individualized attention that you simply cannot find elsewhere. Takashina sensei isn't just an amazing 8th dan karateka; he's a talented educator. He recognizes that different bodies move differently and is able to explain application and tailor your training so you can continually improve. Come to one class and you'll see what I mean - fully half of the kodansha have been with him for 10, 20, even 30 years, still going strong. I cannot recommend this dojo highly enough. I've also watched the childrens' class and can't believe how well they do, and the kids really do love it. Come see.

Having been away from formal martial arts study for many years, I did a fair amount of hunting and research before attempting a return as a student of Takahashi Sensei. His dojo, his style, his demeanor, the other students; all contribute to what has been a very positive experience. For me personally, something that factored heavily into my decision to train at this dojo was the very direct lineage to the founders of the style. Takahashi Sensei is a true treasure to those of us that have a deep appreciation for the history of true Japanese Kara-te.

I have been a student of Sensei Takahashi for over 20 years. He is a tremendous teacher and fosters an amazing atmosphere in his dojo. When I joined, I did not know what to expect. In fact, I did not expect to last that long. . . perhaps six months to try what it was like, would have sufficed. However, it did not take me long to realize the positive attitude and friendship that Sensei Takahashi fosters among his students is something special. His ability to teach each person individually and tailor corrections to those individuals, while he teaches the whole class together, is another gift. I feel I have grown under his tutelage more than I could have if I had learned under most anyone else. He has a way to demonstrate techniques and can physically move his own body better than anyone I have seen. I can assume practicing martial arts and teaching as long as he has (40+ years) adds to what he appears to have been born to do. In addition, the comradery in his dojo is demonstrated by students growing and moving up by helping each other rather than stepping on each other. This a the "dojo spirit" that he has nourished. Finally, I and others are able to take advantage of the great schedule. When I was younger and had more time to devote to karate, I went six days a week and occasionally took two classes on the same day in a row. I highly recommend devoting any available time to learn under Sensei Takahashi if your schedule and desire allows.

No other Dojo or Sensei in the region compares

When I visited to see a class, I saw a Japanese man about 10 years older than me, hold his foot in the air higher than my head. From that moment I knew that this was a Sensei that had a dedication and commitment to perfecting the art that would always inspire to push myself harder. After 15 years studying at various schools, I found the one dojo that would become my final choice. This dojo will spoil you for other schools.

This is a great dojo by every measure. My son (15) and I (45) came in for a 2 week free trial 5 months ago and decided to become members at the end of the first class. We've been going 3 times almost every week (3-4 hrs/week), and 90% of the time, Sensei Masakazu Takahashi, 8th Degree Black Belt, personally instructs the class, normally between 5-15 students, sometimes as many as 20-25. I have been in the education and tutoring business for 25+ years and Sensei Takahashi is probably the best instructor I've seen. He notices everything and intuitively knows how to drive towards improvement and excellence. Every class is a hard sweaty workout, and I leave knowing more and feeling more confident than when I arrived. His advanced students (Matt, Lisa, Janice, Adam, Maria, among others) who often help instructing beginners, are also highly skilled, insightful, and great communicators, overall great teachers and nice people.

I have been training at the Takahashi Karate Dojo in Mt. Kisco, NY for many years, and I continue to enjoy the personalized instruction and exciting workouts. Sensei Masakazu Takahashi (8th-degree black belt) has been personally teaching traditional Shotokan Karate to children and adults in Westchester for more than 30 years. The environment is supportive and encouraging for beginners, as well as intense and challenging for advanced students. Prospective students who are interested in learning more about this traditional martial art are invited to contact the dojo and inquire about participating in a free trial lesson.

Takahashi Sensei is the head of the U.S.A Kenkojuku Karate Association and holds the rank of 8th degree Black Belt. He provides focused, personalized instruction that allows each student to attain his or her maximum potential.

His personal skills and capabilities reach the realm of almost unbelievable. And, his ability to translate those personal capabilities into detailed instruction for students is beyond that which I've witnessed from any other instructor in any sport. He is extremely patient and can help any student improve his or her skill, no matter what level they may have previously attained.
