The Hakka Tribe
The Dragon style we teach is a Haka or Hakka tribal style, and was taught family style, not out of a school. Hakka means “guest’” and the Hakka are a nomadic tribe. You can look them up in Wikipedia, and see a few samples of differing Kung Fu styles on Youtube; but as a nomadic tribe, the Chinese expatriate communities around the world always have a large contingent of Hakka. Hakka Kung Fu styles are not rare, but are not often taught to outsiders, previously because of secrecy and danger, and now because most outsiders do not realize that they exist, and do not have the cachet of Shaolin. But my style works extremely well without 30 hours a week of conditioning.
Inasmuch as the Hakka were nomadic newcomers without local ties, they needed a martial art that could be learned quickly and that worked “out of the box,” and could be effective in the hands of women, elders, and even children. After a fight, they could not rely on the justice of the local police, who were responsible to the local population, so they needed a silent and quick method, preferably one which did not necessarily cause permanent injury so the police would have no serious pressure to pursue the victor.
Our style, or " non-style" if you will, offers dramatic results within one session. Black Dragon Hakka Kung Fu is itself an external and internal art but we also teach Tai Chi & Chi Kung and regular training includes weapons ( staff, long stick, Kali, knife, machete, double daggers, fencing, Butterfly Swords etc.) as well all of our instructors have experience and draw from other systems they have personally studied in outside of Black Dragon making each instructor a unique teacher with his/her own particular applications. In fact, that is something that is expected of all our senior students at Silent Dragon as they come to personalize and express themselves in their own way with the art.
