Shotokan Karate of America is a nonprofit organization that has been teaching traditional karate-do in the United States since 1955. SKA was founded and is still led by Tsutomu Ohshima. Mr. Ohshima is also recognized as the chief instructor of many other SKA-affiliated national Shotokan organizations worldwide.
The Chapel Hill dojo was founded in 1978. We currently practice in the lower school gym at The Duke School. We are fortunate to have several high-ranking and experienced seniors in our dojo. Godan Larry Lazarus, who founded the dojo, usually leads our Saturday morning practice (8 a.m. to 9:30 a.m.). Yodan Rob Clark leads most Monday and Wednesday classes (7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.). Both have studied extensively with Mr. Ohshima. We welcome beginners, lapsed karate-ka, or anyone with an interest in using karate as a means toward self-improvement.
