The Shorin Ryu Karate Academy meets at the YMCA in Grove City and is open to anyone 13 years and older who is interested in training in traditional martial arts. We train specifically in Matsubayashi Shorin Ryu, a traditional Okinawan karate system created by Master Shoshin Nagamine. Learn the secret fighting techniques contained within the katas, along with other practical fighting techniques, so that you can defend yourself in a civilian combat situation. Also, learn about self-protection awareness, conflict avoidance, conflict de-escalation, scaling of force (using force appropriately), legal requirements for self-defense, and medical consequences of fighting. Develop skills in strikes, kicks, basic throws and takedowns, joint locks, and chokeholds.
The head instructor at the Shorin Ryu Karate Academy is Sensei David Hogsette. He holds the rank of 3rd dan, or a 3rd degree black belt, in Matsubayashi Shorin Ryu and a 1st dan in Shotokan. Dr. Hogsette is a member of Shorin Ryu Karatedo International (SRKDI) and the American Shorin Ryu Karate Association (ASKA). Sensei Hogsette regularly attends SRKDI training sessions, is a member of the SRKDI Board of Directors, and his rank is officially recognized in Okinawa. He is also a professor of English and director of the Writing Program at Grove City College.
