There are sports-oriented martial arts schools, schools that focus on "traditional" art forms using old-style weapons (swords, etc.), and there are schools that focus on modern, realistic self-defense. This school definitely falls into the latter category. In addition to hand-to-hand self-defense scenarios, this school also teaches practical defense techniques against knives, guns, clubs, etc., that are as effective for the average Joe as it is for women, children and older adults. As another police officer who trains there, I know the techniques and training I have received, has made me a safer officer. If you want tournament trophies and skills with a samurai sword, check out the other schools... however, if you want practical, realistic, self-defense, check out this place with an open mind.

Mesquite, TX I have been a student of Combat Hapkido for over a year here. As a woman, I wanted to have self defense skills. I have gained so much more. I have several family members enrolled in the program and we are all working on our personal journey. The instruction is exceptional. I learn something everyday, and take away knowledge from every class that I can apply to everyday life and situations.

I encourage everyone to come and try several classes. Mr. Mackie is amazing and will answer all your questions. You will never know if you never try.

Self Defense America has youth programs, kick boxing, yoga and more. They also have seminars throughout the years.

This school teaches street self defense on a daily basis. They dont charge you extra to bring in an entire new program. Very good hands on training for any kind of attack. Great ground escape program, and they include an awesome pressure point program into there everyday training. If you want no nonsense self defense, this is the place. If you are looking for trophies, medals, and learning how to play fight with foam weapons, they will tell you this is not the place. I see why they were voted Best Martial Art School in Mesquite by the Mesquite Readers News!
