I have been taking classes at this dojo for twenty three years. Since my Freshman year at Rutgers, Sensei Barb has been a consistent mix of encouragement, constructive criticism and high standards. The dojo is an interesting mix of ancient and modern tradition. While the class bows in in a circle as opposed to the classic lines; the arts are identified by their Japanese names and practiced to be as close to kata as possible. The focus of the instruction is classical martial arts geared toward perfection of the art and self-defense. Competition is not a focus of instruction.
Sensei Barb focuses not only on the technical aspects of the martial art but also brings her PhD in education to bear by training instructors. The Kodenkan in the dojo's name is commonly translated as the system where 'the senior students teach the junior students.' As a beginner white belt in this dojo, you begin to learn how to give effective feedback and observe carefully.
I can not recommend Danzan Ryu jujitsu, this dojo and its Sensei enough. My experience has been fantastic.
