While Jim is more than qualified in the martial aspects of tai chi, his current venue doesn't have mats and isn't equipped for serious sparring.
I am not interested in that aspect anyway, so it's not a problem for me.
Jim is very passionate about tai chi and loves to share all of his extensive knowledge and personal discoveries. I have had teachers in the past who were very skilled, but did not share information. I really appreciate Jim's ability to break each movement down for beginners and empower the advanced students to continuous enhancement.
No two classes are identical, he is either introducing a new concept or reviewing an important principle - while always accommodating the students requests and interests. With other teachers I only learned to move in one direction. Jim introduced me to "the other side" and I immediately saw the benefit in working both sides of the body equally.
Jim, the instructor, offers an "authentic tai chi experience", and that is certainly what I have found this to be. Plenty of information is provided about the lineage of the Yang style of tai chi, the tai chi masters who have handed down the forms over hundreds of years, and the correctness of the current-day forms taught in Jim's school compared to the oldest available records. As a senior-aged person with arthritis issues, I have found Jim's teaching of the Yang style movement principles very helpful in improving myself both physically and mentally. I thoroughly enjoy attending classes at the Pueblo Tai Chi Club.
