Philadelphia Edo Yagyu Kai
Yagyu Shinkage-ryu is one of the koryu -- the ancient martial systems of Japan. It is a heiho, a strategic system. Although today's practice focuses on the long sword, more advanced practitioners also practice the wakizashi (short sword), tessen (iron fan) and muto (open-hand disarming techniques with roots in classical jujutsu). As with other koryu, Yagyu Shinkage-ryu focuses primarily on preserving and transmitting a martial system hundreds of years old. Unlike present-day Japanese sword arts like iaido, which seeks to perfect the drawing, cutting, and re-sheathing of the sword, and kendo, which is a competition-based system based on specific rules, the various koryu are historical, living martial traditions handed down from teacher to student for more than 400 years. Our branch of the Yagyu Shinkage-ryu traces its lineage to the early 16th century, through seventeen headmasters. Our teacher, Paul Manogue, inherited the school from its previous headmaster, Sono Seigo.

Programs & Class Schedule
Practice is held every Saturday at Old City Aikido from 1:30 pm to 5 pm. Manogue-sensei instructs one Saturday each month. Both beginners and advanced students are welcome, as long they are serious in studying the art. Because we meet only weekly, conscientious and dedicated practice is required of students. At present, we have students from throughout the Mid-Atlantic region: from Pennsylvania, New Jersey, New York, Delaware, Maryland, and Virginia.
Practice is split, with some time dedicated to iaijutsu (solo practice), kenjutsu (paired work), muto (empty-hand), and on occasion, tameshigiri (test cutting).
Please note that there are no room and board facilities and no rental equipment. The dojo has changing rooms and bathrooms but no showers. The current cost of practice is $40/month, due each month.
