The Pax River Aikikai is the newest US Aikido Federation (USAF) dojo in the southern Maryland area. The instructor, David Norton, is fifth degree black belt, and certified through the USAF to teach aikido.
Classes are run through the St. Mary's country Recreation and Parks (SMRP) department, and run for 8-10 weeks at a time, in winter, spring, summer and fall sessions. Sign-up must be done through the SMRP website.
Aikido is a traditional Japanese martial art with roots in ju-jitsu and swordsmanship. There is no conflict in aikido, but rather one utilizes an opponent’s own energy against him, resulting in a throw or pin.
Visitors are always welcome to watch.
