NWMA Coos Bay was founded in November 2018 by black belt instructors Professor David Sigler and Professor Katie Ericson. Professor Katie Ericson is the first female black belt born and raised in Coos Bay. Professor Katie and Professor David met at the Northwest Martial Arts in Eugene, where they both received their black belts. They trained under Professor Harold Utterback and Professor Ryan Kelly, who trained under Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu legends like Megaton Dias, Royler Gracie, and Helio Gracie.
