Originating in South China, Pangainoon or "half hard/half soft" was studied by Kanbun Uechi in the late 1890's under the tutelage of the legendary Shu Shi Wa. Kanbun, an Okinawan, returned home in the early 1900's and began teaching what would become one of Okinawa's most formidable Karate styles. Over the years it has gained great respect for it's unique blend of White Crane and Tiger kung fu. The system is built on Karate's oldest root form, Sanchin, and is studied for self defense, as well as an art.
After the death of Kanbun Uechi, the style was renamed Uechi-ryu (way-chee roo) by his son Kanei Uechi in 1948. Kanei taught George Mattson, the style's recognized American leader, who introduced the system to the U.S.A. in 1960. The system is taught in New Mexico by one of his students, Steve Anthony. Steve studied in Boston under George Mattson and Bob Campbell in the early 1970's and with the Okinawans in 1974 and again in 1984. Steve has been actively teaching in Albuquerque since 1983.
