Michigan Shaolin Wugong Temple
The Michigan Shaolin Wugong Temple offers authentic Chinese mixed martial arts classes to people of all skill levels.
Boris Layupan has practiced Shaolin martial arts for 20 years.
In class, students can expect to be taken through dynamic drills that will hone their reflexes, agility, aerobic conditioning, and martial technique. Students can deepen their practice as they learn about meditation and classical Shaolin philosophies that help people lead less stressful and happier lives.
Classes are offered in Yue Chia (岳家拳, Yue Family Fist) and Yang T'ai Chi Chuan (太极拳, Grand Ultimate Fist). Classes are offered through the Madison Heights Recreation Department.
Yue Chia classes are held in the bottom floor of the Madison Heights City Hall. Students enter via the West entrance of the City Hall building.
T'ai Chi Chuan classes are held in the Madison Heights Civic Park Center Shelter:

Yue Chia is a Northern Shaolin Wugong (warrior art) form which evolved from the tradition of the Shaolin Temple. Yue Chia is the original mixed martial art dating back to the 6th century AD.
T'ai Chi Chuan is an internal Chinese martial art practiced for its defense training and its health benefits. T'ai Chi Chuan was created by the Shaolin monk Chang San-Feng in the 14th century.
Bodhidarma, the founder of the Shaolin Tradition, taught meditation, energization methods and martial arts for the goal of cultivating spiritual awareness. Meditation is the primary method used to realize this. Martial arts training and movement are secondary methods.

Classes are offered through the Madison Heights Recreation Department, (248) 589-2294. Enrollment for the Spring/Summer 2016 Sessions begin on September 3, 2019.
Private classes are available as well for individuals who are unable to attend regularly scheduled classes. Interested parties can call (248) 688-5473 to get details and set up a schedule.
Yang T'ai Chi Chuan classes have been added to the school curriculum.

The adult beginner Yue Chia kung fu class will introduce students to basic defensive and offensive techniques which include blocks, sidestepping, chin na (joint locks), throws, kicks, and punches. Students will learn the practical fighting techniques by classical monks and nuns of the Shaolin Temple in China over 1500 years ago. In addition to greater self-defense capabilities, benefits will include improved health, confidence, discipline, memory. Students wear loose-fitting clothes, no jewelry. Uniforms available for purchase. Those advancing in rank require a uniform. Test fees paid to instructor when necessary.

Students will learn the use of swords, spears, staffs, and other martial arts weapons. Individual and partner drills, weapons forms, and sparring will be used to teach and refine weapons techniques. Students will learn increased awareness, mental focus, better posture, and hone hand-eye coordination and reflexes. Students will purchase practice gear as necessary.

The Yang T'ai Chi Chuan (Taijiquan) class will allow students to develop their balance, strength, and vitality. In addition to enjoying its many health benefits, students will also practice the martial applications of Yang T'ai Chi Chuan, or "Grand Ultimate Fist." Yang T'ai Chi Chuan is an ancient internal Chinese martial art created by the Shaolin monk Chang San-Feng that specializes in short- and middle-range fighting as well as promoting health, relaxation, and meditation. Students will practice T'ai Chi forms, martial techniques, pushing hands, chin na (joint locks), and qigong.

Students will learn the use of the Chinese saber (dao), staff (gùn), and double-edged straight sword (jian). Students will practice techniques, solo drills, two-person matching practice, and sparring for weapons training. Students will learn increased awareness, mental focus, better posture, and hone hand-eye coordination and reflexes. Students will purchase practice equipment as necessary.
