Kaba-San's Institute is a school for serious students who want to learn traditional martial arts. KSI students range from children to adults, who participate in either small group classes or in one-on-one training sessions. In time, as student's gain enough experience and skills, they may also compete in karate tournaments ranging from local to international competition levels.
Founded by Markus D. Fort (1944-2012), KSI first began as the Karamu House Karate Club. In 1991 the school was moved to it's current location on Madison Avenue as Kaba San's Institute of Karate.
Today Kaba San's is operated by John Bernard, who has been the Institute's chief instructor since 2007. For over 20 years, Sensei Bernard has been teaching discipline, attention, and control to martial-arts students at KSI. He holds a 3rd degree black belt in Kajukenpo under Markus D. Fort and a 1st degree black belt under Burt Kollars. He first began martial arts training in 1985 and started teaching in 1993.
