Isshinryu Karate of Madison and Bernardsville is dedicated to providing the finest Martial Arts instruction available. Our curriculum has been developed over the years with an emphasis on education and enjoyment.
Our Martial Arts classes are conducted in Isshinryu Karate, an Okinawan style. We are a traditional dojo and as such we emphasize self-discipline, self-control and respect. The dojo offers a variety of programs with benefits for people of all ages, whether it is developing focus for a child, goal setting for a young adult or providing an activity for the entire family.
While karate is an excellent method of weaponless self-defense, it also emphasizes physical, mental and moral growth. Founded on the principle of mind/body unity, training at Isshinryu Karate of Madison and Bernardsville (formerly the Chatham Karate Academy) includes precise, sustained mental and physical conditioning to develop excellent coordination, keen reflexes and command of the mind and body.
We offer several other activities that are intended to enhance students' experiences. We host a five day Martial Arts Training Camp each summer for our students who wish to attend, usually in early August. We also host seminars from time to time that allow students to have the opportunity to receive instruction from well known Martial Artists.
Our goal is to make the Martial Arts a positive learning experience for all of our students, regardless of their age or ability, and to give the students some of the tools necessary for self-improvement. If taught correctly, karate is much more than punching and kicking. It is a way to instill self-discipline, self-control, self-respect, self-confidence AND self-defense, all important life skills.
