Ishiyama Ryu ("Stone Mountain Style") provides classes in contemporary Japanese sword arts (including battōjutsu and kenjutsu) serving the DC, Maryland, and Virginia areas since 2008. Ishiyama Ryu is a unique American expression of traditional Japanese swordsmanship that draws upon classical Japansese martial arts, modern physics, biomechanics, and geometry to create a powerful and elegant artform.
The class is lead by Steve Baxter Sensei (5th Dan) a long time student of the founder, Russell McCartney Sensei, and was the winner of the 2009 W.O.M.A.A. "America Cup" Advanced Long Sword Division for Chanbara (sparring). Baxter Sensei has a background in traditional Japanese sword arts including Yagyu Shinkage Ryu Kenjutsu and Mugai Ryu Iaido. In addition, he participates in a Hontai Yoshin Ryu Jujutsu study group.
