Hidden Sword Martial Arts
American Karate / Tae Kwon Do and Filipino Martial Arts instruction for children and adults at the Roanoke Recreation Center in Roanoke, Texas.
Our children's and Adult American Karate/Tae Kwon Do program is taught from a self defense perspective (versus Olympic style TKD), and is based on the older International Tae Kwon Do Federation (ITF) patterns.
Our Filipino Martial Arts program is a blend of Professor Remy A. Presas's Modern Arnis, GM Ernesto Presas's Kombatan Arnis, GM Art Miraflor's MiraRada Eskrima, GAT Puno Abon Baet's Garimot Arnis Training (GAT) and W. Hock Hochheim's Pacific Archipelago Concepts (PAC) systems.

Filipino Martial Arts
For over 30 years Chief Instructor Mark Lynn has trained in several Filipino Martial Art systems earning various instructor grades in each system; including Modern Arnis, Kombatan Arnis, MiraRada Eskrima, Garimot Arnis Training (GAT), and the Pacific Archipelago Combatives program (PAC) under Hock Hochheim. Punong Guro Lynn first taught this class as Presas Arnis blending elements of Modern Arnis, Kombatan Arnis, and PAC together. In 2019 he expanded his teaching to include concepts, drills, and techniques from Garimot and MiraRada Eskrima blending different elements of those styles in with the Presas brother's material. Students learn self defense concepts through the training tools of two rattan sticks which from the first class students learn how to block and strike with. Since students are targeting the sticks instead of each others body, they get high repetition of the given movement with stronger impact, thus improving; gross motor skills, proper body mechanics, hand/eye coordination, power, strength, footwork etc.
What makes the Filipino Martial Arts class different then other martial art systems is that in each level the student learns to translate techniques from double stick to single stick to empty hand; using similar drills but with different weapons the student learns to see the commonality of motion, while at the same time challenging themselves by adapting to the differences. Our students in the FMA class have decided not to wear ranks (nor uniforms) so the term level is used to show progression.
Our Filipino Martial Arts class includes instruction in locking, off balancing and take downs, defensive strategies include both armed and unarmed against impact and edged weapons, all in a fun and exciting way. We also offer a FREE workout in the park on Saturdays.
American Karate/TKD Program
American Karate is really an Americanized version of the karate/Tae Kwon Do programs that was taught in the 1960's-1970's. We offer instruction to children as young as 6 through adults, from beginners to advanced students beyond black belt.
Tae Kwon Do (TKD) focuses the instruction on learning how to defend yourself using only your hands and feet. Students learn techniques through kata or form training, going beyond modern performance art instruction, by exploring meanings of movements found within the forms through motion application. Through karate (empty hand) training; students learn discipline, students learn to focus, students learn to work with others, as well as learning the physical skills necessary for rank advancement.
Sensei Lynn started training in American TKD in 1981 and has continued to teach and grow in TKD since then. With over 40 years of training in the martial arts, sensei Lynn has trained in a variety of martial arts including but not limited to American Karate/TKD, Kobudo (traditional Okinawan weapons), and the Filipino Martial Arts (studying several styles). Sensei Lynn freely educates the students on concepts and insights found within these different arts in an age appropriate manner in his classes. Freely blending insights from one art into the next to give the student a wider view of the martial arts.
