Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ)/Catch Wrestling
BJJ is a martial art that was first developed in Brazil by the Gracie family during the mid-20th century. Deriving from the Japanese Martial Art of Judo as it existed before World War II, BJJ has since developed into a hybrid Martial Art with its primary emphasis on ground fighting and submission grappling. This combat martial art focuses on grappling and especially ground fighting with the goal of gaining a dominant position. It promotes the principle that a smaller, weaker person using leverage and proper technique can successfully defend against a bigger, stronger assailant.
Combining BJJ with other grappling disciplines including Catch Wrestling, arguably the precursor to modern forms of wrestling, mixed martial arts, no holds barred completion, and many others, our philosophy combines these combat martial arts to provide our student’s unparalleled tools to defend themselves, compete in grappling tournaments, and fight in the cage. Our students learn a variety of practical positioning, holds, and techniques from the many grappling arts to bring your opponent to submission or defeat — including chokes, joint locks, and cranks.
Muay Thai/Kickboxing/Practical Striking
Most striking curriculums focus solely on one art form. Practical Striking takes the opposite approach by incorporating all of the best striking arts including Muay Thai, boxing, kickboxing, etc. We give each student a firm foundation in the fundamentals of footwork, basic strikes and the art of combinations. As your skills progress, you will be introduced to the Muay Thai, also known as the “Science of Eight Limbs”, in which elbows, knees, forearms, and shins are added to the arsenal. Mix in the many other types of viable strikes from across the martial arts world, and we will help you become a dynamic striker.
Practical striking is an integral part of your training, whether you are looking for fitness, kickboxing, competition or mixed martial arts.
Clinch Fighting
Many schools do not separate clinch fighting from the core martial arts; however, it is used in almost all of the combat martial arts and boxing. Therefore, we feel that it is an art unto itself. Clinch fighting (also referred to as clinch work) is the aspect of stand-up fighting where the combatants are grappling in a clinch, typically using clinch holds. Clinching the opponent can be used to eliminate the opponent's effective usage of some kicks, punches, elbows, and knees or vice versa. The clinch can also be used as a medium to switch from stand-up fighting to ground fighting by using takedowns or throws.
Clinch work comes from many styles and involves various techniques. We pride ourselves in our clinch fighting strategy. Your instructors will combine these styles and techniques to create the most effective clinch fighting plan for your goals - for example, MMA, Gi or No-Gi BJJ, or kickboxing.
Mixed Martial Arts (MMA)
Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) is the fastest growing sport in the U.S. and the world. Contrary to popular belief, MMA is not a martial arts style or discipline. MMA is about learning the techniques of transitioning between the disciplines and utilizing the strengths of each discipline to create the most effective fight style. Therefore, in order to train MMA you must first have a foundation in one or more martial art. Even without prior experience, you can begin by training in BJJ and practical striking. Our experienced instructors will not only teach you proper techniques, you will go through training sessions designed to prepare you mentally and physically for the stress of the cage.
As with any sport, the fundamentals are the most important aspect of building an effective fight style. At Guerrilla Fitness, participation on the fight team is not for sale. A spot on the fight team is earned by demonstrating commitment, skill, professionalism, and overall development as judged my our instructors.
Self-defense
Many believe that self-defense just means physical moves to protect you from becoming a victim. This is false. Self-defense is developing your awareness and assertive skills to avoid potential harmful situations. Learning practical physical techniques designed to prevent you from becoming a victim can empower you both physically and mentally.
At Guerrilla Fitness, we feel the best way to impart true self defense is through hands on training, in which you will learn and practice the physical techniques necessary to overcome your attacker. We offer a number of classes for groups and organizations based on their needs, including on-site training at your group's location.
We incorporate elements of BJJ into our self-defense curriculum it offers the most practical way for women to defend themselves because it uses leverage and body mechanics to overcome larger stronger opponents.
