Greenlake Martial Arts School is the best place that I've found for the things that matter to me: practical self-defense training and a friendly, supportive community.

I was originally drawn to the Greenlake Martial Arts School because of its connection to Bruce Lee's early training partners in Seattle. It's exciting to be a part of carrying forward Bruce's legacy through this system adapted from the Wing Chun kung fu that he taught to James DeMile, Ed Hart, and others. The founder of Tsun Jo kung fu, John Beall, named this style to make it clear that this system is a "faithful descendant" of this teaching that came before.

What keeps me training at the Greenlake Martial Arts School is the commitment to practical self-defense for everyone, regardless of size, age, gender, or other characteristics. The strategies and techniques that we learn don't require great strength, speed, or flexibility.

I also greatly appreciate how we are taught to defend ourselves against real attacks with a full range of responses: escaping and fleeing, deflecting, striking, grappling. .. whatever is appropriate for the situation. This differs from some other martial arts that I've tried that only cover a narrow range of responses.

The head instructor, Matthew Soule, has tremendous patience and skill. I've never seen someone so capable of teaching to such a wide variety of skill levels, personalities, and needs.
