I have been taking karate for about ten years, and I have been growing up with it being a major part in my life since I am still only a teenager. I have learned respect and self-discipline, as well as self-confidence. It has taught me valuable lessons, and it is also a place where all are welcome. There are so many different types of people and ages, but we all find a way to enjoy ourselves in a respectful environment. Growing up doing Martial Arts in this dojo, I consider these people my family. Each and every one of them are special to me, and I look forward to coming to every class. It is a great way to get exercise in a friendly place and to learn how to defend and take pride in yourself. There is nothing higher that I would recommend then taking this class for anyone of any age!

I started learning Martial Arts at GEMA when my son and daughter (twins) were 5 yrs old. It started as something I could do and experience with them. They are now turning 15 and we are still heavily involved in the school and have advanced to the level of 2nd degree brown belt.
Over the years we have enjoyed the family atmosphere of classes at GEMA. My children and I gained confidence in ourselves both physically and mentally. Our Sensei has over 30 yrs experience in martial arts and has also coached other youth sports and is a leader in scouting programs. This school has students of all ages and abilities. Everyone is always welcome to come and learn. The school focuses on self-discipline and respect. There is an emphasis on being both physically and mentally fit. Sensei has a genuine care for all of his students, both in and outside of his class.
Sensei works with each student to help them perfect their abilities in Self Defense, Kata, Technique, and Sparing. All of the students work together to learn and grow. I highly recommend GEMA to anyone interested in learning martial arts.

Having trained at GEMA for a couple of years now, I have come to truly appreciate the intimate setting that we are able to train in. Classes are well structured and organized. Because we use the Webster Recreational Department facilities as our Dojo, the physical components of the dojo are out of our control, however, the mental components make up for any deficiencies. Class is scheduled for every Monday and Wednesday evening, and in 2 years of attending, I don't remember one evening that class was cancelled if the facility was available. The instructors give their time and attention without hesitation and they are the primary reason me and my family continue to train at GEMA.
The atmosphere at GEMA is one of family and is very welcoming. Many of the students have been training for long periods of time and are certainly missed if their training is suspended for any length of time. I know that if I am unable to attend class for more than a session or two, I miss seeing my fellow students and being part of the class. Sensei has created a wonderful program and has kept it instructive, fun and very affordable, especially for families.
All of the instructors are very good teachers and I have learned a tremendous amount in two short years. Four areas of our training, technique, self-defense, sparing, and kata (my favorite), are each highlighted in weekly succession so class is always kept fresh. The workouts can be, depending on how hard you work, very good workouts. Sensei always reminds us that we will only get out of our sessions, what we are willing to put in. I hope that I will always be able to put in 100%.
If you are looking to begin training in Martial Arts, I would definitely recommend this program. You will be welcome, you will learn ways to defend yourself, your health will improve if it needs to, and you will gain self confidence. I know I have experienced all of the above.
Being a student here since I was four it has taught me many aspects in life that have helped me achieve many things in other parts of life. It is a great place to start Karate and to achieve many goals. Everyone is friendly and easy to work with. There are many instructors that come back for special events like picnics and tournaments. It has a great family atmosphere and you feel comfortable very quick. All instructors have at least 10 years of experience. Highly recommend it.
