Stephen Steger, the lead teacher at Full Circle Aikido is a fifth degree black belt with well over 20 years teaching experience. He has created a caring and cooperative dojo that teaches effective self defense and how to approach conflict in life. He accepts students four years old and up.
Stephen teaches loving protection of all beings. An attacker is restrained or redirected in a manner that keeps both people safe. In self defense situations, this protects the defender from legal problems after the attack.
Defense against multiple attackers is practiced in almost every class and all students are encouraged to participate. This gives students a chance to use the self defense techniques in a controlled situation.
Stephen recognizes that some students have physical limitations and accommodates them. He emphasizes fitness for longevity and body mastery. As I trained, stiff shoulders and knees loosened up and made movement easier.
Stephen understands that his school is in the US and does not use the Japanese rituals that you may find in other schools. Beyond the names of the techniques, you will hear very little Japanese. He does not use a shrine, clapping, or formal bowing to the teacher. The students gather in a circle at the beginning of class.
