The Family Self Defense School was created by Sensei Mark Hawley holds a 9th dan in goju-kai karate, a 4th dan in Polynesian kempo, a 5th dan in honsisul hapkido, a 5th dan in Kapu Kuʻialua and a 2nd dan in jiu-jitsu . He has also studied wing chun, silat, various styles of karate, military combatives, various styles of kung-fu, boxing, and wrestling. He has over 40 years martial arts experience and 20 years of teaching experience.
The style taught at Family Self Defense School is called Atavism. Atavism combines the many styles Sensei Hawley has studied into one style. Students learn self-defense techniques as well as traditional kata and kata specific to Atavism. They will also learn basic jiu-jitsu as well as basic hapkido. Students will have the opportunity to get rankings in Go-ju kai karate, hapkido, kempo, and others on top of their rankings in Atavism.
The Family Self Defense School is a family friendly environment that caters to ages as young as 5. We spilt the classes up into kid's class and adult's class. Children 5 to 12 will be in kid's class and at 12 years of age students may chose to also attend adults class. The instructors have many years of experience teaching kids and several years worth of teaching martial arts.
