My 15 year old son was welcomed and made to feel included in the group. It is a small class size, so students get personal attention during training. He made so much progress in a short time. I watched him grow stronger in body and mind. His confidence increased and so did the way he carried himself. The instructor maintains a respectful atmosphere. Exactly what my sassy teen needed!

Erie Shotokan karate dojo is more than karate, it is a family!

When deciding to place my children in martial arts, I did extensive research to find the perfect place. They visited and tried many different dojos around our city. Erie Shotokan karate was the first dojo that after trial we joined immediately.
I was excited about the fact that Erie Shotokan karate Dojo is a part of iskf but also the sensei's are jka trained. Although different in many ways, these students get to benefit from both. Both sensei Oscar and sensei Haydee bring something unique and wonderful to the dojo. Both are extremely knowledgeable, and intense as well as gentle. I couldn't be more proud that I can leave my children in their care and not be worried but feel safe. They are not only gentle and kind with our kids but they are loving as well.
I love that our sensei's hold the students accountable for what they are taught inside the dojo, as well as outside of the dojo. They teach more than just karate. They teach their students accountability, discipline, self-respect, honor, reliability, dependability, success, togetherness, teamwork, and acceptance.
A personal favorite of mine is that everyone is welcome in the dojo and made to feel a part of it whether you've been a member for five years or five days. I love that the students do more than just karate they have had picnics, picnics on the beach, training on the beach in the water and on the sand, they have had pizza parties and movie Nights in the dojo, celebrations and holidays, a personal favorite of mine was their international day. Where each family brought a dish to share from their nationality to teach the children about one another and their background. Teaching Unity.
Erie Shotokan karate dojo is more than karate it is a family and that in itself is most important to me.

Erie Shotokan focuses on high quality techniques and student focus

We are very pleased with Shotokan Karate. This dojo, under leadership of Sensei Haydee, is focused on high quality techniques not chasing belts. Belts are secondary to the learning and progress the students make through focus on katas, kumite (partnered drills) and overall character building.
A prior review stated that an instructor was heavy handed with students. That may have been a prior sensei or some other situation. That is not the case with Sensei Haydee who is very respectful and thoughtful in handling the students. She pays close attention to the students' individual development and ensures safety at all times. All katas and kumite are safe sessions and no full contact is permitted.
We highly recommend Shotokan karate, as the focus is on building character and confidence, not breaking boards and chasing new belts.

Some parents think he hits students too often.
I went to this dojo when it was on lower peach across from imports. back then I didn't have a lot of money and we worked out a payment plan they are a great family. If you're looking for something to learn for self-defense discipline, restraint, and protecting your family and have a good time this is an awesome group of people to train with look no further. I've had to use it once in my lifetime to defend family and I wouldn't choose any other dojo to teach this art of Shotokan.
