Desert Monkey Dojo
We don’t have our own commercial space. We are so old school that we don’t even have a school. Over time, we’ve come to believe that the old way of itinerant teaching is superior to the current retail world of martial arts. The fact is that all you need to learn is a flat, temperature controlled space, an open mind, and a bit of courage. Everything else is bullshit.
Our classes include elements of Aikido, Tai Chi, Cane, Centering, and basic martial principles. We stress both self protection and protection of your attacker whenever possible. Self development is far more important than competition with others, so we never spar. Our classes are intense, fun, and open to all types of humans. Testing and rank is available, but not required. Be Brave. You can do this.

Programs & Class Schedule
AIKIDO
Morihei Ueshiba developed Aikido to stress the moral and spiritual aspects of the martial arts, especially nonviolence, harmony, and peace. Physically it involves throws and joint locks that are derived from Jujitsu, Judo, and Kenjutsu. Aikido is always practiced with a partner and has no offensive techniques and few strikes. Instead it places emphasis dynamic movement, balance, and technique. The benefits include self defense and confidence, but the ultimate goal of Aikido is personal transformation of your everyday life. And it’s fun.
TAI CHI
The Tai Chi forms were developed over hundreds of years ago as a meditative way to address health, calmness, and self defense. Tai Chi is practiced all over the world and has both physical and mental benefits. If done regularly, it improves muscle tone, flexibility, balance, and coordination. The forms provide a perfect platform to study martial skills, meditation, and personal enrichment. And they’re fun too.
Both aikido and tai chi are profound vehicles for change and martial arts growth. However, they each have an interesting drawback. Good Aikido practice requires a partner and usually a mat. This limits your practice to a few times a week. Tai Chi can be done anywhere, all by yourself, but it lacks the direct feedback provided by another human body. Practiced together they compliment each other’s strengths without compromising their integrity.
Cane
We’ve been using weapons ever since our earliest ancestors were running around in a loincloth and, in a moment of inspiration, grabbed a tree branch to hit some dude over the head. Almost every country’s indigenous martial art includes some kind of stick work. If it works for all of them it’s probably going to work for you, too. The cane is a qualified appliance under the Americans with Disabilities Act. This makes it the perfect weapon to be carried anytime, anyplace in our society. Furthermore, weapons training makes a great complement to any practice.
