His class uses Taekwondo and the primary focus for belt levels while stressing self defense and real life application. If you are interested in a traditional, by the book, martial arts class. Look elsewhere. HOWEVER, this does NOT mean that it is in any way a "poor" or "just for profit" dojo. He teaches using knowledge and techniques learned from a many different sources, which he has stripped down to a curriculum he believes important and crucial to taekwondo and self defense. The methods he uses to teach young children have generally revolved around excitement and entertainment while still teaching the fundamental skills needed for when they are old enough to apply the techniques to their full potential. This teaching method dramatically changes for older students. Meaning, the Taekwondo is no longer a "laughable" adventure, but rather something that requires focus and self discipline to be successful. If you are doing something wrong he WILL let you know, and not always in the way you would like it being told to you (particularly for the older students). There have been reviews I have read of him being a "rude" or "self centered" instructor. This I honestly cannot argue against, especially since I have left his dojo on multiple occasions extremely upset because it seemed everything I did was never good enough. But after a week or a month of practicing the technique over and over again I was able to EARN his approval and then get upset about something else I was falling short at. Lastly, with all this said, he is a very kind and considerate man. When you go to test for each belt, especially your various degrees of black, he will test you on your knowledge of the history of taekwondo, the history of the forms, the science of the techniques, laws, and so on. If you honestly want to learn to defend yourself and learn taekwondo in an environment that will make you feel proud of your progress. Catura's Martial Arts is the place to be!
