I've studied at a lot of different places through the years, and this group is definitely among the top. Auburn JKD has a lot of people with excellent character and no ego problems. Friendly and casual; everybody is treated with respect and made to feel welcome. I feel much more confident that I could defend myself in a real confrontation than I did when I started. Rare to get access to so many styles in one place too.

Broad-based, Practical, and Fun

After years of moving about the country and moving from style to style and school to school, I wanted something practical, no-nonsense, and challenging. I hardly expected to find it in Auburn, AL, but I did find it in Auburn JKD club. Sifu John's instruction is always practical and applicable, at times deadly serious. However, counterpoint to the practical, "reality-based" nature of JKD (and in contrast to the myth that martial arts training should involve a lot of suffering), the classes are always fun and often funny.

Befitting its location in a college town, the classes progress in "semester" fashion, with 4month (give or take) blocks devoted to the different arts and techniques that characterize this approach to JKD -- Filipino Martial Arts, Indonesian Silat, Western Boxing, Muay Thai, Brazilian Ju Jitsu, Wing Chun, Jun Fan Gung Fu/JKD, etc.

I suppose it also doesn't hurt to mention that it is the most affordable school I've trained at.

Jeet kune do is an excellent way to “diversify” your martial arts experience. Our class rotates arts approximately every 3 months. We train everything from boxing to Wing Chun to Jujitsu. The quality of instruction is outstanding especially considering the diversity in the training. The nice thing about practicing different arts is it helps you find those things that really fit your body and your style.

We train a lot of scenarios that are not applicable to the ring (weapons, eyes, vital targets, etc). This class appeals to those who are looking for straight forward self defense rather than a system that is focused on the ring.

The students who train in this class vary in age from 18 to 50+. It is a great mix of people. The class size usually fairly small and allows plenty of one on one time with the instructor. I think the price is outstanding for the amount of instruction we receive.

I would recommend anyone interested send the instructor an email and come check it out.

I highly recommend this class to anyone interested, despite skill level. Everyone there is nice and there are no egos. We are a family and always welcome new brothers and sisters.

Great mix of different arts taught. Low key environment with legitimate instruction and practice provided. Provides good instruction for beginners and those with martial arts experience.
