The Good, the bad, and the UGLY

Ancient Arts: The Good, the bad, and the UGLY. -First, I will say that I attended this school only for a few months until some shady ethics of the teacher were brought to light. Refusing to be a victim, I stopped attending classes. The Better Business Bureau also got involved due to the poor business practices of Ancient Arts. The original complaint and the teacher's responses can be seen on the BBB website under "BBB Business Reviews" for those interested. Read it to his last response. He knows he was in the wrong. On to the review. . . . -The Good: Its Wing Chun. Wing Chun is a very effective, practical, and efficient martial art. The instructor and the two other elders in the class know their stuff as far as wing chun is concerned. -The Bad: In order to progress in the art, you are required to learn it's history. There were several classes where the majority of the class was spent being quizzed on names, lineage, who taught who what. Those classes felt like a waste of time to me. I was there to learn how to fight/defend myself, not learn trivia. Lastly, I feel like the students were viewed as nothing more than wallets to the instructor. Be prepared to hear all kinds of creative ways to be asked to spend more money and dont be too surprised when guilt trip tactics are used. -The UGLY: There is no practice or concept of "full disclosure" at this institution. It is a common practice to get his to-be students to sign a liability waiver that is also tied to a 12 month contract that he never mentions. -Summary: Personally, I dont care how good or knowledgeable in martial arts the instructor may be, I refuse to learn under someone with such questionable morals and ethics. I will never return or recommend this school to anyone. If you want to train at this school, PLEASE read any and everything presented to you and make sure you know what you are getting into because he sure wont let you know until you're hooked and they are in a position to get your money anyway.
