American Self-Defense Club is a family run Dojo that specializes in Isshinryu and Shorinryu Karate-do. Our Dojo prides itself on our Sparring and self-defense application more so then Kata's. We still teach weapon fighting and Katas to all students who wish to learn, as well as the application of the katas; but we focus more on the real world self-defense that stems from Karate.
Our curriculum gives full black-belt achievement under Isshinryu and Shorinryu Karate with all the necessary knowledge that is needed to back the ranking. We also offer our School system which is Mu Karate-Do that focuses more on self-defense, physical conditioning and the students sparring ability. Our philosophy is that not everyone wants to learn katas, so we give them an alternative that focuses on all of the traditions of karate; even the body conditioning that most schools dont teach anymore, so we can help keep the karate tradition alive in the 21st century.
The head instructor is Renshi Ralph Metz who is a 5th degree black-belt under Shihan Joe webb, who is a 7th degree black belt in Isshinryu. His eldest son is a 4th Degree black-belt under his father and has been training in Isshinryu karate for over 26 years. His youngest son Sensei Brian Metz has 20 years of Isshinryu Karate experience, holding a 4th degree black belt. He has also trained in Shorinryu Karate-do holding a 1st degree black-belt. He also trained in Judo, Jiujitsu, Kick-boxing, Muay-Thai, and Kyokushin karate; having studied Gojuryu, Uechiryu, and Aikido on an independent basis.
