Hapkido is martial art form that is both, in essence, an art and science of self-defense. It combines a powerful arsenal of strikes, kicks, strong blocking techniques with joint locks and destruction techniques, and also includes throws, sweeps, falling, grappling, and finishing techniques.
Hapkido is based on three major principles: (1) the principle of non-resistance; (2) the principle of circular motion; and (3) the principle of water. Through the knowledge of these three principles, an opponent’s force can be used against them, making it easy to be able to deal with any type of adversary, regardless of their size or strength. This makes Hapkido truly a form of self-defense that everyone can use.
Hapkido uses a wide range of weaponry for self-defense and counter attacks like the cane, belt, and Dan Bon (short stick). These integrated weapon handling techniques are used against attacks from all directions, whether you’re sitting, standing, or lying down, or facing one or many opponents.
