I have been training at ASR for about five years now and I could not be happier with the level of training ASR provides. ASR has two black belt instructors, fourth degree Alex Ruas and black belt Jerry Johnson, who take the time to ensure students are performing the techniques and drills correctly, making a point of not moving to the next technique until each student understands and performs the technique correctly. ASR falls under the lineage of Coral Belt Master Joe Moreira and Red Belt Grand Master Francisco Mansur. Joe Moreira makes at least annual visits and conducts individual training as well as seminars for members of ASR. Francisco Mansur has paid a visit to ASR, conducted a seminar and was so impressed with the level of instruction provided by ASR, Master Mansur accredited ASR as a member of Master Mansur's Kioto Jiu Jitsu family. Grand Master Mansur studied under the great Helio Gracie, being awarded his red belt from Helio himself. At ASR, you will learn traditional BrazilianJiu Jitsu as a martial art designed to overwhelm and submit an attacker, not tournament jiu jitsu with a focus on points. At ASR, you will not have classes led by blue belts or have blue and white belts distracting class by teaching each other on the side of the mat. I would recommend anyone who is serious about learning the self-defense of Brazilian Jiu jitu visit ASR and receive a free week of instruction.

I started bjj and muay Thai training back in February 2014, I had three years fight experience prior to meeting coach and the family. I can honestly admit the bjj world was new to me because I was only used to stand up boxing. Even being new to this skill everyone there was so uplifting with such loving and positive spirits. I was shocked to see so many great people in one place, with everyone all ages and sizes helping and pushing each other forward to be greater than day one. I am so pleased to have met coach Ruas and coach Johnson there. I have gained so much humbleness, and knowledge in such a short time. Coming from a ex EMT and firefighter for the community and not such a great yr prior I can testify that every time I touched and left the matt I felt the wheight of the world had been lifted. I would recommend this gym for anyone of any shape and size who is seeking to get or stay in shape. Any child for a extra curricular activity, anyone with low self esteem or who goes everyday with fear in there heart of being bullyed or learn self defense in a respectable manner. Any military or law enforcement wanting to advance their skills and knowledge of the art. I am thankful for my new found extended family and hope to meet more and more brothers and sisters on the mat. :)

My son and I have been with the gym since September of 2010. It has been a real confidence builder for him and I look forward to each practice. I train for the exercise and camaraderie and I have thoroughly enjoyed my time at the school.

ASR is the real deal! Coach Ruas is the only BJJ black belt in the area. He teaches the traditional art and focuses his training on the fundamentals instead of flashy moves. Another added benefit of his school is the connections to other well known and well versed BJJ practioners. In March of 2014, Coach Ruas's mentor/instructor, Master Joe Moriera, came to Pace and provided a private class for ASR students only. When joining ASR you are truly joining a family. Becoming a part of this family is one of the best decisions I have ever made.
