A family-friendly school with great instructors. Head instructor, Matt McDaniel, has a real gift with kids, striking the right balance between funny and strict. AKKA offers junior level belts so kids can start learning techniques. Adult belts are possible after age 16. Both my kids started 4 years ago. One just earned his junior 1st degree black after a very intense test in Colorado (my other child is probably a year or more away from this). The test was an amazing and inspiring thing to witness and the candidates there definitely worked hard for their belts. Black belt testing occurs twice per year in Denver and candidates from all schools travel for the 3 day test. My oldest will start working for the next 2-3 years on his adult 1st degree black.
They have anti-bullying classes, kids night out, family events, and a STORM team (special team of role models). Lots of families train together and instructors are great mentors for kids struggling outside of the dojo. The main principles of honesty, courtesy, respect, and discipline are not only taught, but exemplified here.
The school has moved to the frontage road between 87th and 75th. It's a smaller location, but has enough room to get the job done. I don't love it like the former location, but the strength of this school really is in the instruction. Having met the instructors from other AKKA schools, I'd say you can't go wrong with any of them.
