Aikido is a modern Japanese martial art founded in the 1940's by Morihei Ueshiba, known as O'Sensei. While Aikido is based on the ancient arts of the sword and spear and includes throws, joint locks and pins, the modern art is unique in it's philosophy of non-agression and emphasis on the universal protection of all.
This philosophy guides the martial art's psychology and dynamics, creating an art dedicated to harmonizing with our environment and to become centered within. Aikido practice is the life-long study to bring the mental, spiritual and physical together into one unified state.
Aikido training is strenuous and demanding, but not violent or rough. The practice is soft but energetic, with an emphasis on connecting with your partner while maintaining a martial stature. Because the nature of Aikido practice is to resolve conflict through harmonious movement and blending with an attack, techniques can be practiced regardless of your strength or size, making training suitable for men and women of all ages.
