The Academy of Okinawan Karate (AOK) is a very good place to learn Karate, no matter your age. I joined when I was nine, but i was in class with people up through their 40s and 50s. They offer younger class groups, such as six through nine, and six and under. I have learned an incredible amount from the teacher, Shihan, and others. Not only do you learn Karate, self defense, etc.; you also are taught self discipline, self esteem, among other great values. It is a place for anyone wanting to learn Karate in a fun, bag punching, fat-burning way, and I highly recommend it.
Pros: Very traditional teachings & concepts, my son learned a lot & gained self-confidence.
Cons: Keep in mind this is a business & money is to be made. That being said, the monthly tuition is expensive when you take into consideration it doesn't include promotions to the next belt color. Students & Families are charged to attend gradutation ceremonies as well. The schools are small, so space is limited for spectators.
Big Disaapointment: When me moved out of state & joined a new dojo, we discovered that the uniforms & equipment we ordered through AOK was mostly likely discounted for the school. However, we were told we had to pay the full price that was listed in the catalog. So my assumption is that AOK pocketed the discount that could have been given to me as a parent with a dedicated student.
