I am a member of ARMA Denton in North Texas. I was recently traveling in the Nashville area and I had the pleasure of practicing with the ARMA Middle Tennessee group. I was able to learn much from my time with them and their passion for the study of MARE was apparent and colored every part of the session. The focused training was so good that I have been working with my local study group to implement a similar program.

I am a student with the ARMA Middle Tennessee. We have a very focused and engaged study group. All of the members are very passionate about the study of MARE. Not only that, but along with the wonderful study and training partners we have with the Middle Tennessee group we have access to the resources of the larger ARMA family. If you want to learn the Knightly Art of Combat with a wonderful group of people, this is a great group to practice with.

I am not a ARMA member (although I may be in the future.). I am a historian and author. I have visited during ARMA events on two occasions and was very impressed with the level of knowledge and skill that was displayed with medieval and rennaissance weapons. My interest was in learning more about the material culture of the Middle Ages for a writing project. Seeing John and his students at work went well beyond that. One can research weapons of the period, but until one can see how they were actually employed in a systematic way, using all their attributes (blade, hilt and pommel) one can never truly appreciate how deadly and effective they were.
What I also saw were people, males and females, having fun. They were working out in a healthy way that also developed grace, reflexes, speed and strength. If you have an interest in martial arts, I suggest you try ARMA.

ARMA Tennessee is a great group to train with. I an my group frequently train with our Tennessee neighbors. ARMA Deputy Director John Farthing has a wealth of knowledge and ability in regards to the Martial Arts of Renaissance Europe. He is willing to travel and schedule training to accommodate many schedules, locations and ability levels. If you are at all interested in the martial arts of medieval and Renaissance Europe, or the history and culture of that period, you are very lucky to have this resource available.
This group while not the most organized on my visit has a burning passion for the European martial art. It is hard not to get sucked into the excitement as you begin trading ideas, theories, and questions about The Art. I would definitely recommend this group to any who are wishing to pursue the European Martial Art. The leader of the group even participated with a severe injury, that he should not have been on.
