SASKA's (the South African Shotokan Karate-do Academy's) dream is simple: to do the best karate in the world. In SASKA, it is our wish that each of our karate-ka will strive to reach their full potential, cultivate an indomitable spirit, summit the mountain and never settle for second best.
Shihan Koos, SASKA's head instructor, has attained his eighth dan (black belt) grade in 2009. He has trained with many renowned Shotokan masters - Kanazawa, Enoeda, Tanaka, Asai, Shirai Hiroshi and Kase Taji (Do yourself a favour: Google them!) - and especially Sensei Kase Taji, eventually adopting sensei Kase's style.
Griffins is Shihan Koos's own club under SASKA, and this club's karate is of an excellent standard. Griffins Val de Grace classes are usually in Afrikaans, and Griffins Silverton classes are in English. The club approaches karate in a balanced way, training hard at basic techniques, forms (kata), fighting (kumite) and competition karate as well as some self-defence techniques.
