Black Belt Moo Duk Kwan

Moo Duk Kwan is the only school in Roanoke and surrounding area to have a 4th Dan certified Black Belt in the Kukkiwon, Tae Kwon Do . What does this mean? When you join a Martial Arts school, as you promote and move up the belt ranks you’re given a certificate. This certificate is important especially if you enroll into a new Martial Arts school.

The certificate is what proves your belt level. If the school is locally owned, the new school may not recognize your certificate and you will need to start again at white belt. The importance of a school that belongs to a National Organization ensures that your belt is recognized from State to State. The Kukkiwon (World Tae Kwon Do Federation) is INTERNATIONALLY recognized meaning your certificate is accepted around the World. This means they money you have invested in an internationally recognized school is an investment and grantee of your belt rank.

Vision

Black Belt Moo Duk Kwan is a Korean style of Martial Arts. The name means "House of Discipline" or "School of Martial Virtue" and implies a place of dedication. The members of Moo Duk Kwan are dedicated to the traditional Martial Arts and the tenets of Tae Kwon Do. We are neither a “Sport Club” nor a "tournament school" our goal is to spread the knowledge and traditions of Tae Kwon Do.

We are dedicated to the pursuit of tradition emphasizing personal development and growth. We teach the students that they must first believe in themselves. In a dedicated Martial Arts program as this, there are proven benefits to children, such as improved school grades and better focus.

We promote values that last a lifetime. The students are taught Courtesy, Integrity , Perseverance self control and Indomitable Spirit. Students learn that being honest, working hard controlling their anger and being polite are necessary skills in life.

The Martial Arts should be considered a journey and an art. In this journey every walks the same path but approaches it differently, some will walk others will run. There are many ways to reach the end and each student will approach it in their unique way this is where the "art form" comes in. In this Journey we all begin as Tae Kwon Do Students and by the time we reach Black Belt we will become Students of Tae Kwon Do. This system does not discriminate, meaning it is structured and enables students with special needs to learn and grow traveling the path as well.

Programs & Class Schedule

Welcome to the home of Black Belt Moo Duk Kwan. I welcome your comments and look forward to growing in the Martial Arts with you. There are two types of Tae Kwon Do Members; there are Tae Kwon Do Students and students of Tae Kwon Do. The difference is simple one who dedicates themselves fully to the pursuit of learning and growing within the Martial Arts are Students of Tae Kwon Do. Those who seek to fight and earn a belt are Tae Kwon Do Students. In my many years of learning I have found that Tae Kwon Do Students leave the School and the art after they learn it is hard work. This is the Kukkiwon the Headquarters to Tae Kwon do. I have been asked why certificates from the Kukkiwon are so important. In simple terms the average Martial Arts School will charge $100.00 a month, with dedication and applying oneself it is possible to achieve a Black Belt in most systems in as little as three years. The problem is the certificates, if your school has a certificate from a local group or organization and you travel to another state where the Organization is not recognized your Belt is not recognized. This is why National and International Certification are so important. The Black Belt Certificate from the Kukkiwon is recognized World Wide by all styles and systems

Moo Duk Kwan is split into two groups. One is Soo Bahk Do, formerly Tang Soo Do, and earlier Hwa Soo Do. The other is Taekwondo Moo Duk Kwan. Soo Bahk Do was founded by Grand Master Hwang Kee, November 9, 1945. Moo Duk Kwan Taekwondo merged together with eight other Kwans to form Taekwondo.

The name Moo Duk Kwan means "School of Martial Virtue"
Moo – military, chivalry, martial; within the ideograph the inner part of the symbol is the word for "stop" and the outer part means "weapon"
Duk – benevolence, virtue, goodness, commanding respect; within the ideograph on the left it means "little steps" or "to happen", and on the right the character means "moral"; thus moral steps or perhaps virtuous conduct
Kwan – large building, palace, library; again within the ideograph the left part looks like a roofed building and technically means "to eat" (under a roof).

Hapkido includes a vast variety of arm an leg joint locks, weapon techniques, throw, kick, hit, and nerve pressure techniques. Hapkido is no martial sport but a martial art, which is outstandingly suitable for self-defense. It can be learned both by men and by women, regardless of their age.
